Improving the physical health of long-stay psychiatric in-patients

Irene Cormac, David Martin and Michael Ferriter

Irene Cormac is a consultant forensic psychiatrist with a special interest in physical health care at Rampton Hospital (Retford, Nottinghamshire DN22 0PD, UK. E-mail: irene.cormac{at}nottshc.nhs.uk). David Martin is an autism services development officer for Solihull Primary Care Trust in the West Midlands, and he has been instrumental in the introduction of a primary care project for people with learning disabilities in northern Birmingham. Michael Ferriter is a research fellow at Rampton Hospital and an honorary research fellow at the University of Sheffield and the University of Wales, Swansea. Irene Cormac and Michael Ferriter have studied the physical health of 460 patients at Rampton Hospital.

Research evidence has shown that morbidity and mortality rates are higher in psychiatric patients than in the general population. This article describes factors that affect the physical health of psychiatric patients living in institutions and the steps that can be taken to review, monitor and improve their physical health. The physical health care of long-stay patients should reach the same standards as those expected in the general population.
