Choice: wake up and smell the coffee!

INVITED COMMENTARY ON... CHOICE IN MENTAL HEALTH{dagger}

Frank Holloway

Frank Holloway is a consultant psychiatrist and Clinical Director to the Croydon Integrated Adult Mental Health Services (Bethlem Royal Hospital, Monks Orchard Road, Beckenham, Kent BR3 3BX. Email: f.holloway{at}iop.kcl.ac.uk), and Chair of the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Faculty of Rehabilitation and Social Psychiatry. His interests include mental health services research, mental health policy and ethical aspects of psychiatric practice.

The ‘choice agenda’ reflects a key element of the modernisation of public services. There are many conceptual and practical difficulties with the implementation of choice within mental health services, but these are not in any way unique to this client group. Professionals will have to adapt to the new world that will encompass a plurality of paradigms of care and service providers.
