Problem psychiatrists?

Neil Margerison

Neil Margerison is currently a consultant psychiatrist with Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health Trust, and an Adviser (Secondary Care) with the National Clinical Assessment Service (NCAS, Market Towers, 1 Nine Elms Lane, London SW8 5NQ, UK. Email: neil. margerison{at}ncas.npsa.nhs.uk). He was joint Medical Director for Barnet (subsequently Barnet, Enfield and Haringey) Mental Health Trust for 8 years. He joined NCAS as an Adviser in September 2004, where he has a developing interest in health issues affecting doctors. He was given a liaison role between NCAS and the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2007.

This article focuses mainly on issues regarding doctors’ clinical performance (capability) and behaviour (conduct), and is aimed at medical managers who deal them. It covers identifying problems and how to manage them, describes typical underpinning (disciplinary) frameworks and sets out the role of the UK’s National Clinical Assessment Service and other external bodies in more serious cases.
